AUTOMATION THINNING

You might have noticed at some point that automation that looks like this while you are recording it…

…ends up looking like this after the recording stops:

This is because Live automatically “thins” the automation data. In other words, it removes breakpoints that are deemed unecessary and creates a simpler shape with more straight lines.

These simplified automation shapes are a little easier to edit but sometimes noticeably reduce the accuracy of a recorded performance. If you find this to be the case, it’s easily tweakable in the options.txt file. Just add the line

-ThinningAggressiveness=0

…to leave automation in tact exactly as it was recorded. Instead of zero, you can use any number between 0 and 1 with 1 being the maximum amount of thinning. Live’s default is .45 so there’s a good bit it can be adjusted in either direction.
